New York, NY – The U.S. Marshals New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force (NY/NJRFTF), assisted by the U.S. Marshals in the Middle District of Pennsylvania, arrested a suspect Friday wanted in connection with the shooting death of a 7-month-old girl.

Matthew Rodriguez, 18, was identified as the driver of the moped involved in the deadly shooting of a 7-month-old baby in East Williamsburg. Surveillance video showed two men on a moped and the passenger brandishing a firearm shooting into a crowd.  A mother and father with their child ran to a nearby bodega for cover and discovered the child in the stroller covered in blood.

The suspects eventually crashed into oncoming traffic while trying to make a getaway. The shooter, Amuri Greene, was apprehended at the hospital seeking treatment for an injured leg.

Rodriguez was later identified as the driver of the moped.  The case was turned over to the NY/NJRFTF.  Case investigators worked diligently to locate Rodriguez and tracked him to Pennsylvania.  They mobilized a team quickly and through a joint effort with the U.S. Marshals in the Middle District of Pennsylvania arrested Rodriguez late Friday afternoon.

“A child’s innocence begins at birth, and a 7-month-old baby should be bringing laughter and joy to those around them, not horrifically killed by the alleged shooter with his accomplice,” said Vincent DeMarco, U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of New York. “The U.S. Marshals Service immediately sprung into action with our law enforcement partners to bring those involved to face justice when we heard of the tragic news. We can only hope the arrests bring the baby’s family even the slightest comfort knowing their child’s life taken so tragically will not go unanswered.”

NY/NJRFTF Commander Jhovanny Gomez said, “The senseless murder of a 7-month-old baby has shaken our community to its core.  We commend the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force and our law enforcement partners for their swift diligent efforts in apprehending the suspect.  Our thoughts remain with the family during this profoundly difficult time.”

The NY/NJRFTF began operations in April 2002 and was the first regional fugitive task force to become fully operational following the Presidential Threat Protection Act of 2000. The NY/NJRFTF was the flagship that has allowed seven other regional fugitive task forces to be created across the country. With partnership agreements with over 90 federal, state, or local agencies and 13 fully operational offices, the NY/NJRFTF has successfully apprehended over 95,000 fugitives since inception.
