Washington, DC – Today, the U.S. Marshals Service celebrates its 236th anniversary. As our Nation’s first and most versatile federal law enforcement agency, the U.S. Marshals Service continues to build on a legacy of steadfast service to our country and our justice system.
The U.S. Marshals Service carries out missions that are central to our federal justice system: protecting judges and witnesses, apprehending fugitives, housing and transporting prisoners, ensuring sex offender compliance, and managing and returning seized assets to victims.
“The strength of the United States Marshals Service has always been our people. For 236 years, our men and women have served our Nation with justice, integrity, and service,” said U.S. Marshals Service Director Gadyaces S. Serralta. “I am proud to stand alongside nearly 5,400 dedicated professionals who embody these values every day, and I am committed to ensuring that our agency continues to meet the challenges of tomorrow with the same honor and courage that has defined us since 1789.”
President George Washington appointed the first 13 U.S. Marshals on September 24, 1789. Since then, the U.S. Marshals Service has played a role in virtually every facet of the Nation’s federal judiciary during times of challenge, crisis and peace. From upholding the law in the untamed western territories to enforcing orders that advanced civil rights, the U.S. Marshals Service has been a critical part of answering the call of and strengthening the Nation.
The U.S. Marshals Service remains the Federal Government’s primary law enforcement agency for fugitive investigations. In fiscal year 2024, the U.S. Marshals Service arrested over 74,000 fugitives, more fugitives than all other federal law enforcement agencies combined.
Throughout its history, the U.S. Marshals Service has upheld its mission in times of both challenge and progress. That same dedication will continue to define the U.S. Marshals Service as we serve the American people in the years ahead.
