New York, NY — The U.S. Marshals Service for the Southern District of New York and the District of Massachusetts announced the arrest of two fugitives wanted for the stabbing of a New York City Police Department (NYPD) detective this past Friday. The fugitives were taken into custody in Massachusetts following an intensive, non-stop multi-jurisdictional manhunt.

Dangelo Caraballo and Sneider Mejia were positively identified as the suspects wanted in this vicious stabbing. The case was turned over to the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force (NY/NJ RFTF) to locate and apprehend the fugitives. The moment the case was received, task force investigators worked tirelessly and developed intelligence indicating that the fugitives had fled the New York area together. USMS task force members tracked the pair to Massachusetts, where a targeted operation was conducted with the assistance of the U.S Marshals Service in the District of Massachusetts, the Massachusetts State Police, and the Lynn Police Department. Late Tuesday night, both individuals were taken into custody without further incident or injuries.

“When individuals commit violent, unprovoked acts against members of law enforcement, there is nowhere they can hide. From the second this case was assigned, the USMS in the Southern District of New York and the NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force worked around the clock, tracking these suspects across state lines to ensure they were apprehended without further violence. We will always stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our police officers to hold violent offenders fully accountable,” said U.S. Marshal Ricky J. Patel.

“The attempted murder of an off-duty NYPD detective is an attack on every member of law-enforcement, and these two fugitives will now face justice,” said Dennis Matulewicz, head of the U.S. Marshals Service for the District of Massachusetts. “These arrests are the result of the exceptional teamwork between the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Forces and our outstanding state and local partners who worked tirelessly on this investigation.

The U.S. Marshals Service will always relentlessly pursue those who commit acts of violence, and our prayers are with the NYPD detective for a fast and full recovery.”

The fugitives are currently in custody of the Massachusetts State Police awaiting extradition to New York.

The NY/NJ RFTF began operations in April 2002 and was the first regional fugitive task force to become fully operational following the Presidential Threat Protection Act of 2000. The NY/NJ RFTF was the flagship that has allowed seven other regional fugitive task forces to be created across the country. With partnership agreements with over 90 federal, state, or local agencies and 13 fully operational offices, the NY/NJ RFTF has successfully apprehended over 95,000 fugitives since inception.
