U.S. Marshals Arrest Fugitive 9 Years on the Run in the Dominican Republic

San Juan, PR – Today, United States Marshal Wilmer Ocasio Ibarra, announced the arrests of Angel Cruz Cabrera.

On June 11, 2011, Angel Cruz Cabrera along with three other inmates, escaped from a state correctional institution in Bayamon, PR. Cruz Cabrera was serving a sentence of 60 years for robbery, attempted murder, murder and weapons law violations.

The Puerto Rico Violent Offenders Task Force (PRVOTF), along with the Puerto Rico Department of Corrections, developed information indicating Cruz Cabrera was residing in the Dominican Republic. The U.S. Marshals Service Foreign Field Office in the Dominican Republic (FFO-DR) was contacted for assistance.

On September 12, 2020, personnel from the Policia Nacional of the Dominican Republic, the Directorio Nacional del Control de Drogas (DNCD) with the assistance of U.S. Marshals Service Foreign Field Office in the Dominican Republic personnel, located and arrested Cruz Cabrera in the city of Higuey, DR.

Cruz Cabrera will face an extradition process to be extradited to Puerto Rico.

United States Marshal Ocasio Ibarra stated "This arrest is a testament to the outstating investigative work and tireless efforts of the U.S. Marshals Service, Foreign Field Office-Dominican Republic, the Puerto Rico Violent Offenders Task Force, state and local partners who worked together to bring this dangerous fugitive to justice".

The Puerto Rico Violent Offenders Task Force is comprised of investigators from the Puerto Rico Police Department, San Juan Municipal Police, Puerto Rico Department of Corrections, Department of Revenue Service, Port Authority and Puerto Rico State Marshals.
