For immediate release

Bud Spellman, Assistant Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal

Eastern District of New York
Brooklyn, NY
(718) 260-0400

Brooklyn, NY – Vincent F. DeMarco was sworn in today as the 33rd U.S. Marshal for the Eastern District of New York. Chief Judge Roslynn R. Mauskopf administered the oath of office.

DeMarco, a lifelong resident of Suffolk County, earned his Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics from St. John's University in 1991. He began his distinguished career as a Suffolk County Deputy Sheriff in 1994. On November 8, 2005, Vincent F. DeMarco was elected to the position of Sheriff of Suffolk County. On January 1, 2006, he was sworn in and became the first uniformed member of the Sheriff's Office to be elected Sheriff.

DeMarco has made the innovative use of technology a hallmark of his work in public office. He implemented Traffic and Criminal Software (TraCS) mobile technology to streamline ticketing paperwork and improve reporting to the courts and New York State DMV. Through federal grants and asset forfeiture funds seized from drug dealers, he purchased the B.A.T. Mobile—a fully contained D.W.I. patrol unit equipped with breath and blood testing equipment, video recording devices, computer workstations, and a secure space to hold arrestees during processing. In 2012, the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office was awarded first place in The National Law Enforcement Challenge (NLEC) traffic safety awards program. This highly regarded competition recognizes law enforcement agencies throughout the U.S. for their outstanding effectiveness in reducing traffic injuries, detecting and deterring crime and saving lives. That same year, the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office received the prestigious New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services Law Enforcement Accreditation, which recognizes organizations that meet or exceed general expectations of quality in the field. In 2013, under DeMarco's leadership, the Suffolk County Correctional Facility received the New York State Sheriff's Association's Corrections Accreditation by meeting or exceeding 166 standards of excellence.

Eastern District of New York Chief Judge Roslynn R. Mauskopf stated, "Marshal DeMarco has had a long and distinguished career as a law enforcement leader, and exemplifies the professionalism, integrity, bravery and service of the men and women of the United States Marshals Service, He is a native son of the Eastern District of New York, and our Court is so very fortunate to have him as our United States Marshal."

Upon the swearing in, Richard P. Donoghue, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, remarked, "Having a true law enforcement professional like Marshal DeMarco at the helm will make what is already the best United States Marshals Service office in the nation even better. We wish him all the best and extend our lasting thanks to Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Bryan Mullee, for his exceptional service as Acting Marshal over these last three years."
