Washington, D.C. – Antonio Janifer, 28, was taken into custody Monday by the U.S. Marshals-led Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task Force took into custody Monday night and charged with first- and second-degree attempted murder following the shooting of Baltimore City Police Officer Joshua Jackson on May 20.

Janifer was arrested in Prince George's County, Maryland, around 8:30 p.m., without incident and transported to Central Booking in Baltimore where he was interviewed, processed and placed into the Baltimore County Detention Center to be housed awaiting trial.

According to Baltimore City Police, Janifer refused to stop and led officers on a short, high-speed chase which ended when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a parked car. Janifer attempted to flee on foot but was soon caught by Jackson. During a brief struggle, it is alleged Janifer shot Jackson multiple times with a .40 caliber handgun. After the shooting, Janifer allegedly carjacked the driver of a nearby vehicle and escaped. Members of the Baltimore City Police Department later identified Janifer as the suspect.

"I am extremely proud of the work of our task forces to bring the most violent fugitives to justice quickly and safely," said U.S. Marshals Service Director Donald Washington. "Mr. Janifer's alleged brazen attack on a Baltimore City police officer and his disregard for public safety made him a threat to the entire community."

The U.S. Marshals Service is the federal government's primary agency for fugitive investigations. U.S. Marshals task forces combine the efforts of federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to locate and arrest the most dangerous fugitives.
