For immediate release
Ryan Guay, Supervisory Deputy U.S. Marshal
Portland, ME – The U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) Maine Violent Offender Task Force (MVOTF) announces the arrest of Marc Assante, 37, on a State of Maine warrant for 7 counts of Gross Sexual Assault, in Hermosillo, Mexico.
After the conclusion of an investigation conducted by the Healthcare Crimes Unit from the Office of the Maine Attorney General and the Town of Buxton, Maine Police Department, Assante was indicted on seven counts of Class C Gross Sexual Assault by a York County, Maine Grand Jury on March 6, 2023. Assante pleaded not guilty to those charges and remained out on bail.
On July 14, 2025, Mr. Assante failed to appear at a status conference to discuss setting the case for trial, as well as for a hearing on the State’s motion to amend his bail. The State of Maine had requested the Court modify the conditions of bail to more restrictive terms to ensure Mr. Assante’s appearance. Having failed to appear for the hearing on the State’s motion, the York County Superior Court issued a warrant for Assante’s arrest. Assante’s whereabouts were unknown at the time the warrant was issued, and the Maine Attorney General’s Office requested assistance from the U.S. Marshals Maine Violent Offender Task Force.
Based upon our fugitive investigation, USMS Investigators determined Assante had fled the country and was currently hiding in the country of Mexico. Working with the United States Marshals Service, District of Arizona and International liaisons, Assante was captured and extradited back to the United States on September 12, 2025.
The USMS District of Maine, Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal, Josh Taylor said: “This investigation demonstrates the far-reaching capabilities of the United States Marshals Service. Whether it is across town or across borders, fugitives cannot outrun the law. If you choose to flee, we will locate you, we will apprehend you, just know justice is coming.”
The USMS, Maine Violent Offender Task Force is comprised of members of the U.S. Marshals Service, Maine Department of Corrections, Biddeford Police Department, U.S. Border Patrol, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Maine National Guard
Counterdrug Task Force and the Coast Guard Investigative Service.
