Harrisonburg, VA – A noncompliant sex offender from Michigan arrested in Virginia in January was convicted Tuesday following a two-day jury trial of one count of 18 USC 2250, “Failure to Register as a Sex Offender.”
Deon Andre Green, aka Dalayah Assir Yashar’al, 38, of Benton Harbor, Michigan, had been residing in makeshift camp sites in the George Washington National Forest between August and December 2025 with his wife and nine children.
U.S. Forest Service special agents had encountered Green and his family on at least a dozen occasions between September 2025 and December 2025. During these contacts, Green, a Black Hebrew Israelite, provided false information concerning his identity.
In December 2025, U.S. Forest Service personnel were able to positively identify Green, and when it was learned that he was a sex offender convicted in Michigan in 2011 of third-degree criminal sexual conduct, they referred their investigation to the U.S. Marshals Service.
In January, personnel from the USMS, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Virginia State Police located and arrested Green without incident on charges brought by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Western District of Virginia and the USMS.
Green will be sentenced at a date to be determined by the Honorable U.S. District Judge Jasmine Yoon in the U.S. District Court in the Western District of Virginia.
“This case is a textbook example not only of an offender who meets the definition of those for whom the Adam Walsh Act was intended, but of the partnerships between federal law enforcement that caused this individual to be brought to justice,” said Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal Matthew Davis, Western District of Virginia. “Further, the tenacity with which the U.S. Attorney’s Office committed to and tried this case resulting in his conviction, brought full circle the collaborative efforts that exist in the Western District of Virginia.”
First Assistant United States Attorney, Robert Tracci, Western District of Virginia United States Attorney’s Office stated, “I commend the outstanding work of the United States Marshals Service in bringing this offender to justice. This Office will continue to seek maximum accountability against child sex offenders and those who violate federal sex offender registration and notification laws enacted into law to keep our communities safe.”
The U.S. Marshals Service is the federal government’s primary agency for fugitive investigations. Nationwide, 60 local task forces are dedicated to violent crime reduction by locating and apprehending wanted criminals. These task forces also serve as the central point for agencies to share information on fugitive matters. In addition, the Sex Offender Investigations Branch, of the United States Marshals Service, supports these tasks forces to investigate violations of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act (Adam Walsh Act) and, in cooperation with the United States Attorney’s Offices, prosecutes those in violation of the same.
