U.S. Marshals Safely Take Fugitive Into Custody Following Suicide Attempt During Arrest Operation

For immediate release

East Orange, NJ – Members of the U.S. Marshals Service District of New Jersey and New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force safely apprehended a wanted female fugitive today after she wrapped an extension cord around her neck and threatened to jump from a fourth-floor fire escape during an arrest operation.

Tamara Rankin, 39, was wanted by the East Orange Police Department since April of 2026, for aggravated assault and weapons offenses.

Deputy U.S. Marshals and task force officers, working alongside local law enforcement partners from the East Orange Police Department, located Rankin at an apartment complex on Oraton Parkway in East Orange while attempting to execute an outstanding warrant for her arrest.

As deputies and task force officers knocked on the door, Rankin fled toward an exterior fire escape and climbed to an elevated landing several stories above the ground.

During the encounter, the woman appeared emotionally distressed and threatened to jump.  Deputies and task force officers immediately shifted their focus from enforcement to crisis intervention, working to de-escalate the situation while local emergency personnel responded to the scene.

After a tense standoff lasting approximately two hours, a Deputy U.S. Marshal and task force officer were able to get close enough to secure the woman and pull her to safety where she was turned over to emergency services personnel.

“No arrest is more important than a human life,” said Nicholas Ricigliano, Acting U.S. Marshal for the District of New Jersey.  “The professionalism and restraint shown by the deputies and responding officers helped bring a dangerous and emotional situation to a safe conclusion.”

The U.S. Marshals Service acknowledges the assistance of the East Orange Police Department, East Orange Fire #2, University Medical Intensive Care Unit Chief, and Life Pulse Emergency Medical Services.
