
Stephen G. Serrao was designated as the United States Marshal for the Northern District of Georgia (N/GA) on March 10, 2026 by United States Attorney General Pam Bondi. As the designated United States Marshal, Mr. Serrao leads the activities for the Northern District, which includes 46 counties with a population of over 6 million people. Mr. Serrao is responsible for protection of the federal judiciary, federal fugitive apprehension, seized asset management, federal prisoner housing and transportation, and Witness Security Program operation.
Prior to being designated as U.S. Marshal, Mr. Serrao served as a Senior Advisor to U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Sean P. Duffy. Serrao led the DOT efforts to migrate the organization from older technology to a new platform for enhanced efficiency and collaboration.
Mr. Serrao began his law enforcement career with the New Jersey State Police (NJSP) where he served as an active duty police officer for over 25 years and retired at the rank of Captain. During his tenure with the NJSP, Serrao held several notable high-level assignments including Intelligence Management & Analysis Commander, Counter-Terrorism Bureau Chief, and Special Assistant to the Superintendent. He was instrumental in the design and set-up of the State of New Jersey Fusion Center and managed the Statewide Intelligence Management System. Serrao supported the NJSP participation in multiple State-Federal Task Forces and was previously himself deputized as a federal marshal for his work with the ATF, DEA, FBI, and U.S. Customs Service. Serrao has also supervised the NJSP’s participation in the FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force and served as Assistant Director of Operations at the NJ Office of Counter-Terrorism.
Upon his retirement from the NJSP, Mr. Serrao served for 18 years as a Justice & Public Safety Advisor for the SAS Institute, a global leader in information technology and analytics based in Cary, NC. At SAS, Serrao utilized his expertise in intelligence, organized crime, gangs, white collar crime and sophisticated information technology to serve as a Subject Matter Expert. He supported international sales and business development teams and led analytical efforts. His responsibilities led him to work with local, regional, state and federal police agencies. His work at SAS took him across North, Central, and South America, as well as the United Kingdom, where he collaborated with police, military, and government intelligence agencies.
Serrao also spent a year as the Southeast U.S. Region based risk, compliance, and security manager for Caterpillar - a global leader in manufacturing construction and mining equipment, engines, and locomotives. He was responsible for 30 facilities, where he coordinated risk management and implemented site security operations to ensure the safety of several thousand employees and the protection of physical and cyber assets at locations in Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, and the District of Columbia.
