Washington, DC – The U.S. Marshals Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force (PSWRFTF) on Jan. 22 arrested a man wanted by the San Jose, California, Police for robbery and carjacking.
Edward Macias was the accomplice of Mohamed Husien who was involved in a violent crime spree including carjackings, police pursuits, and multiple officer-involved shootings on Jan. 21.
Earlier in the day at a San Jose car dealership Husien stole a car at gunpoint before leading police on a 45-mile chase to Hollister where he got into a shootout with Hollister police. Husien was able to carjack another vehicle which he drove back toward San Jose, firing multiple rounds at pursuing California Highway Patrol officers.
Husien exited the freeway in downtown San Jose and attempted to carjack a third vehicle. A pursuing San Jose police officer saw Husien in the intersection and attempted to strike him with his vehicle but missed. A shoot out occurred in the middle of the intersection where the police officer was struck in the head but was able to continue the fight. Husien was shot and run over by responding police officers, killing him and ending the violent crime spree.
San Jose Police Department (PD) detectives immediately identified Macias as Husien’s accomplice who dropped him off at the San Jose car dealership. Sacramento police had identified Macias and Husien as the two suspects who attempted to carjack another dealership at gunpoint three days earlier.
At approximately 8:25 p.m. on Jan. 21 PSWRFTF members were requested to find and arrest Macias. Task force investigators soon developed information that Macias was in Los Banos at an associate’s home in the 20600 block of Mervel Avenue. PSWRFTF set surveillance in the area and waited for a search warrant.
At approximately 4 a.m. on Jan. 22 pursuant to a search warrant, PSWRFTF initiated a surround and callout at the residence, activating lights and sirens and ordering Macias and all occupants to exit. Macias was taken into custody without incident. The house was cleared for any further occupants and turned over to San Jose PD.
Formed April 2002, the U.S. Marshals Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force mission is to locate and apprehend fugitives, with priority given to fugitives wanted for violent crime. With its primary office in Los Angeles, the PSWRFTF operates throughout California and Nevada. Since its inception the PSWRFTF has arrested more than 105,900 fugitives.
