U.S. Marshals Round Up Violent Fugitives During Operation Gaurdian in DC
WASHINGTON – The United States Marshals Service District Court for the District of Columbia initiated a warrant round-up named Operation Guardian. The operation commenced on Monday, August 14 and concluded on Friday, August 25.

The primary goal of Operation Guardian was aimed at bringing violent D.C. fugitives to justice. Throughout the operation, U.S. Marshals from District Court worked alongside federal and local partners to arrest violent fugitives while strengthening relationships with fellow law enforcement and the community along the way. The Marshals partnered with the Metropolitan Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, United States Probation Office, Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency, United States Postal Inspection Service, INTERPOL, the Sex Offender Targeting Center and Department of Treasury OIG.

Operation Guardian primarily focused on fugitives who had violent and extensive criminal histories. Some fugitives U.S. Marshals sought had prior convictions of murder, drug distribution, weapons violations, sex offences and escape.

Operation Guardian was a great success and resulted in the closure of 76 federal felony warrants. Some of the fugitives hid or attempted to flee to avoid apprehension, but due to collaborative effort of all the agencies involved all were captured without any significant incident or injury. Due to the assistance from the community, U.S. Marshals were also able to act on information that will undoubtedly lead to additional arrests, according to Marshals officials.

An arrest of significant interest during the operation includes a fugitive who escaped from custody in 2015. During this arrest, U.S. Marshals confiscated quantities of methamphetamine and PCP from the fugitive’s residence estimated at a street value of $100K. The fugitive will be charged in U.S. District Court for the possessing the drugs as well as the escape charge. Additionally, a joint investigation by the FBI and the Marshals resulted in the apprehension of a couple involved in a sex trafficking ring.
