U.S. Marshals Make "SWIFT" Arrest

Albuquerque, NM – Thursday, May 1, 2014, the United States Marshals Service’s South West Investigative Fugitive Team (SWIFT) task force arrested Derek Malkhassian, 25, in the 4200 block of Eubank in Northeast Albuquerque, NM. Malkhassian’s warrant stems from an incident that occurred 2 weeks ago in Bernalillo County District Court. Two weeks ago, Malkhassian was on trial for possessing a methamphetamine lab, harboring a fugitive, and being in possession of 3 ounces of meth. The District Court jury trial took a break for lunch and when it returned Malkhassian was nowhere to be found. Malkhassian skipped out on his jury trial, causing the Court to issue a warrant for his arrest.

The District Court Judge in charge of the trial asked the Marshals Service’s SWIFT task force to go find Malkhassian and arrest him. SWIFT task force officers were already in the courtroom, they were set to testify against Malkhassian. Malkhassian’s trial stemmed from a US Marshal task force 2011 arrest. In 2011, SWIFT task force officers arrested Malkhassian when he was harboring fugitive Kristin Lockwood in his trailer. Malkhassian’s trailer was located in a trailer park in the 8400 block of Pan American Freeway in NE Albuquerque, NM. During the arrest, officers observed a meth. lab in the premises, along with methamphetamine. In 2011, Malkhassian was charged with the crimes and bonded out pending his trial last week.

May 1, 2014, the US Marshals SWIFT task force received information Malkhassian was in the 4200 block of Eubank in NE Albuquerque, NM. A team of Deputy US Marshals and Albuquerque Police Detectives investigated the information and were able to arrest Malkhassian in an apartment without incident. At the time of his arrest, Malkhassian was found in possession of roughly 10 grams of methamphetamine, over $5,000 in US currency, 1 pistol, 4 long guns, numerous I-phones, tablets, and Burglary tools.

Malkhassian was booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center without incident and awaits a new trial date on his 2011 arrest, as well as an initial appearance on his new charges. District of New Mexico, United States Marshal Conrad Candelaria said “Commitment defines the Marshals Service Fugitive Task Force that is comprised of effective partnerships with local, county, state, tribal and federal law enforcement agencies that is unified with an overarching priority which is to maintain safe communities. There is no doubt that the apprehension of this fugitive will prevent further acts of criminal behavior and reduce the harm to our citizens and communities throughout all of New Mexico.”
