Sex Offender on the Run Arrested After 7 Years

Albuquerque, NM - The United States Marshal Service in Southern Ohio arrested a Sex Offender who had been running from authorities in New Mexico for 7 years. Jeffery Powell (62) was arrested by The United States Marshals service in Cincinnati, Ohio on January 22, 2014. Powell a convicted sex offender has been wanted by the Torrance county Sheriff's office for failing to register as a sex offender since March of 2007.

Criminal Investigators for the Marshals Service in New Mexico along with South West Investigative Fugitive Team (SWIFT) Task Force members with the Torrance County Sheriff’s Office recently developed information that lead them to believe Powell was hiding in Ohio. Powell, whose arrest for sex offenses started in 1981, was arrested for his first failure to comply with sex offender registry in 2005. Then again in 2007 failed to register resulting in a warrant issued for his arrest. Chief Deputy Marshal for the District of New Mexico Alex Ramos said, “There is not a more worthy cause than to make sure sex offenders are where they are supposed to be. Our children and our communities are at risk when sex offenders are unaccounted for.” Powell is currently in Ohio pending extradition to New Mexico.
