Federal Escapee Caught After High Speed Pursuit

Sacramento, CA - The U.S. Marshals Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force (PSWRFTF) arrested Michael Paul Thompson a 32 year old wanted for federal escape in Stockton.

The PSWRFTF along with San Joaquin County Sheriffs Deputies were conducting surveillance at the Days Inn off interstate 5 and Lathrop Road for Thompson. At approximately 7 p.m. Thompson and another male identified as Ricky “Smoke” Gonzales were seen exiting the motel towards the parking lot. Deputies converged on their location but Thompson and Gonzales jumped into a Cadillac Escalade and fled out of the parking lot. Deputies pursued the vehicle driven by Thompson onto Interstate 5 northbound, Thompson frantically drove in and out of traffic at speeds of over 100 mph. Thompson exited at the County Club Boulevard off ramp and continued on surface streets in Stockton. The Stockton Police Departments Community Response Team CRT and California Highway Patrol (CHP) joined in the pursuit as Thompson ran stop lights and stop signs with reckless disregard for the public. Thompson’s vehicle became disabled when it struck a police cruiser at the intersection of Mission Road and Princeton Avenue.

Thompson and Gonzales were ordered to the ground at gunpoint by deputies and officers. They were both taken into custody without further incident. Thompson was convicted of distribution of methamphetamine and sentenced to 120 months in federal prison in July 2010. In October 2011 Thompson escaped from federal prison in Southern California. Thompson had made comments that he would not go back to prison.

Thompson was booked into the Sacramento County Jail to await initial appearance in Sacramento Federal Court. Gonzales was booked in the San Joaquin County Jail on an outstanding Parolee at Large warrant.
