Acting U.S. Marshal for the Southern District of Indiana - Joshua C. Schimmel

On June 14, 2026, pursuant to the Federal Vacancies Reform Act, Joshua Schimmel assumed the role of Acting United States Marshal for the Southern District of Indiana.

Acting United States Marshal Schimmel oversees all United States Marshals Service (USMS) operations in the Southern District of Indiana, including federal judicial security, court security, fugitive investigations and apprehension, sex offender and missing child investigations, prisoner operations, asset forfeiture, and service of process.

Acting Marshal Schimmel began his law enforcement career as a Corrections Officer with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office in Naples, Florida. In 2001, He graduated from the Southwest Florida Criminal Justice Academy as a certified Florida Police Officer then promptly joined the Gainesville Police Department in Gainesville, Florida. In 2004, Mr. Schimmel joined the USMS as a Deputy United States Marshal assigned to the District of Columbia, Superior Court. He has served in several other capacities with multiple districts and divisions. These include the Middle District of Florida, Southern District of California, Office of Professional Responsibility-Internal Affairs, and the Judicial Security Division’s Office of Protective Operations. In 2019, Mr. Schimmel was selected to serve as the Chief Deputy United States Marshal of the Southern District of Indiana. In this role, he helped lead the men and women of the Southern District of Indiana with effective communication, promoting a positive-growth mindset, establishing clear and obtainable goals, empowering others, rewarding positive performance, and ensuring personnel are all held accountable for their actions.

In April of 2022, Mr. Schimmel was designated by the Attorney General to serve as the Acting Marshal for the Eastern District of Arkansas, a role he held until August of 2022 when he returned to the Southern District of Indiana.

Mr. Schimmel interned with the USMS’ Northern District of Florida during his senior year, before graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Criminology from Florida State University.
