U.S. Marshal for the District of Minnesota, James Stuart

The Honorable James Stuart was sworn in as the U.S. Marshal for the District of Minnesota on May 27, 2026, following his confirmation by the United States Senate.

United States Marshal Stuart oversees all United States Marshals Service (USMS) operations in the District of Minnesota, including federal judicial security, court security, fugitive investigations and apprehension, sex offender and missing child investigations, prisoner operations, asset forfeiture, and service of process.

A respected leader with more than four decades of public service, Marshal Stuart previously served as the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association and spent 12 years as the elected Sheriff of Anoka County, Minnesota. Prior to being elected sheriff, Mr. Stuart had served in a variety of public safety and community leadership positions. During his tenure as sheriff, Mr. Stuart also held leadership roles with the National Sheriffs’ Association, the Minnesota Sheriffs’ Association, and numerous other organizations at the local, state, and federal levels.

Throughout his distinguished career, Mr. Stuart has led through some of the nation’s most challenging moments, including periods of civil unrest, public health crises, and community transformation. Recognized nationally as an advisor, instructor, and speaker, he has partnered with the Department of Justice, the National Institute of Corrections, and the White House on law enforcement policy, leadership development, and reform initiatives.

Mr. Stuart is a United States Marine, and a graduate of St. Mary’s University and the National Sheriffs’ Institute, and studied Public Safety Leadership at the University of Minnesota. As a lifelong advocate for collaborative leadership, Mr. Stuart has dedicated his career to strengthening public safety through integrity, service, and community partnerships.

His contributions have earned numerous state and national honors and awards, including the Spurgeon Award and MAGNUS Princeps Leadership Award. The National Sheriffs’ Association awarded him with the Medal of Merit, and he was nominated for “National Sheriff of the Year” in 2015, 2016, and 2019 for his contributions to the community and to the field of criminal justice.

Mr. Stuart has consistently demonstrated a commitment to providing the best possible services to those that he proudly serves and actively participates in numerous collaborative efforts across the district and the nation. It is his belief that by working together, we can make a difference.
