Explosives Detection K-9 (ED-K-9)
"Beacon" was originally bred for guide dog work. Beacon was born
at the Guide Dog Foundation - Seeing Eyes in upstate N.Y.
Beacon spent a year with his foster family and returned to the Guide Dog
Foundation to train. Unfortunately, due to Beacon's love of
chasing squirrels, Beacon did not pass the Guide Dog training and chose
a different profession. ED K-9 Beacon can identify up to 19,000
different types of explosives, from large to trace amounts. Beacon
is trained on the food reward method, and trains multiple times every
day. Beacon and his handler are assigned to the United States
Marshals Service/Hazardous Response Unit and Special Operations Group.
