Fugitive On The Run Captured in Dothan, Alabama by U.S. Marshals After 18 Months

Montgomery, AL – Bobby Duane Bates, age 61, was arrested by the United States Marshals Service on Friday, April 11, 2014. Bates was sentenced on November 4, 2010 to serve a thirty (30) month federal prison sentence followed by three (3) years of supervised release for Possession with the Intent to Distribute Marijuana. Bates reported to his probation officer on August 24, 2012 in Cocoa Florida and absconded immediately afterwards.

U.S. Marshals in the Middle District of Alabama developed information indicating that Bates was residing in the Dothan area. Additional information led them to an address on McAlister Road, where Bates was located and taken into custody without incident. Further investigation also revealed that Bates had been residing in the Dothan area for approximately a year and was using the aliases “Kriss Mellow” and “Darryl Vinson”. Once taken into custody several fictitious identification cards were taken removed from Bates’ person and other charges are currently pending.

Bates was taken to the Frank M. Johnson Federal Courthouse on Monday, April 14, 2014 for his Initial Appearance before United States Magistrate Judge Terry Moorer and will be extradited back to the Southern District of Texas at a later date.

The United States Marshals Service is the primary federal agency tasked with conducting fugitive investigations throughout the United States and they apprehended over 110,000 federal fugitives in 2013. Marshal Art Baylor stated, “It doesn’t matter how long you run, we won’t get tired of chasing you until you’re caught”.
