Marshals Arrest Former Police Officer for Violations Under the Adam Walsh Act

Washington – Daniel Coles, a sex offender registered in Washington, D.C., was arrested Tuesday in the 3300 block of Style Avenue in Laurel, Maryland for violations under the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act, announced U.S. Marshal Michael Hughes, U.S. Marshal for the District of Columbia, Superior Court.

In June 1999, Coles was convicted of second degree rape and second degree sex offense for which he was sentenced to 15 years incarceration with a term of 5 years probation to follow. At the time of the offense, Coles was employed with the Metropolitan Police Department as a police officer. In 2008, Coles registered with the sex offender registry in Washington, D.C. as a Class “B” offender, required by law to register annually for 10 years. Since 2009, Coles has been using an address located in the 3000 block of 30th Street Southeast in Washington, D.C. as his registry address.

In January of 2011, Coles initially registered with the State of Maryland indicating that he worked in Maryland as well as having a secondary residence in Maryland. Coles was considered a Tier III registrant in Maryland which requires him to register every 90 days for life. In August 2011, Coles reported to the State of Maryland that he no longer worked or resided in Maryland and that he moved back to Washington, D.C. Coles never reported the Maryland residence to the D.C. Sex Offender Registry.

In February 2012, U.S. Marshals Service, D.C. Superior Court Sex Offender Investigations Section began to investigate Coles under possible violations under the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act. During the course of the ten month investigation, members of the D.C. Superior Court Sex Offender Investigations Sections gathered evidence to show that Coles was living in Maryland and had not been reporting the address to the State of Maryland or the D.C. Sex Offender Registry.

On Tuesday, members of D.C. Superior Court Sex Offender Investigations Section and Superior Court Warrant Squad arrested Coles in the 3300 block of Style Avenue in Laurel, Maryland. A search warrant for the residence was also executed at the time of arrest.
