U.S. Marshal Deputizes Candlelighters
Children for Baseball Charity Fundraiser
El Paso, TX – Robert Almonte, the United States Marshal for the Western
District of Texas, will deputize the two children who have been selected as
honorary coaches for this year’s Guns ‘N’ Hoses baseball tournament hosted by
Candlelighters of El Paso. The U.S. Marshals Service is among the agencies
participating in the annual tournament to raise money for the organization. The
deputation ceremony will take place following a press conference hosted by
Candlelighters and the El Paso Fire Department at 2:00 pm Tuesday, August 21, at
Fire Station No. 1, 201 S. Florence.
The tournament, which pits law enforcement officers against firefighters in a series of baseball games, will take place at Cohen Stadium. The first game will be at noon on Friday, August 24, 2012, and will feature the returning champions, the El Paso Fire Department, playing the U.S. Marshals. This is the first year the U.S. Marshals Service will be playing in the event. The opening ceremony will be held on Saturday, right before the championship game at 7:00pm. The event will conclude with a fireworks display.
Candlelighters is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to enriching the lives of children who have cancer by providing hope, support, encouragement, advocacy and education to those children, their families, and the community at large.
According to the Candlelighters web-sight, the agency currently serves over 1,200 registered families with 200 families in active treatment. Some of their children are newly diagnosed and some are in remission. Some have relapsed. Some are in active treatment. Some are long term survivors. And sadly, some are angels.
Marshal Almonte stated, “Law enforcement officers face criminals and firefighters go in to burning buildings to save lives every day. They are seen as heroes. But we are not the courageous ones…it is these children and their families who battle with the evils of this disease who show true courage.”
