|
Austin, Texas – Curtis Derrell Snerling of Detroit, Michigan was arrested this afternoon without incident by the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force. Snerling was arrested at approximately 1:00 p.m., in eastern Travis County off of FM 969.
Task Force officers were alerted to Snerling’s presence in the Austin area several days ago based upon an investigation conducted by the Michigan Fugitive Task Force based in Detroit. It is alleged, Snerling in June of 2010, abducted, bound, beat and sexually assaulted the victim over the course of a day. The victim was able to summon local police after her screams were heard by neighbors.
Austin task force officers determined Snerling may have arrived in the Austin area a few weeks ago and residing in a home eastern Travis County. This morning, task force officers received information indicating Snerling’s presence in that residence and possibly armed with unknown weapons. It is also unknown if the homeowners were aware of Snerling’s charged criminal conduct in Detroit.
Travis County SWAT was summoned to assist, however, Snerling at the time was observed exiting the residence through a side door. He submitted to arrest when task force officers ordered him to the ground.
Two handguns were removed from the residence and the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco & Firearms in Austin are investigating potential federal firearm violations.
Snerling was remanded to the custody of the Travis County Sheriff pending extradition to Wayne County, Michigan.
Robert R. Almonte, United States Marshal for the Western District of Texas states, “I am grateful that the arrest of Curtis Derrell Snerling came to an end without law enforcement officers or members of our community getting hurt. The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force will continue to pursue fugitives who victimize our community. ”
