U.S. Marshals Service Will Sponsor a Week of the
Dryades YMCA Summer Enrichment Camp in July
New Orleans, LA Ė The week of July 12th Ė July 16th 2010, Deputy United States Marshals (DUSMs) from the Eastern District of Louisiana (E/LA) sponsored the final week of the six week Dryades YMCA Youth Summer Camp in New Orleans. During that week of camp, Deputies assisted the camp staff with the administration of the campís curriculum, facilitated activities, mentored, taught swimming lessons, and instructed campers on the Gang Resistance Education and Training (G.R.E.A.T.) summer curriculum. Most importantly, however, the DUSMs provided the young campers with a positive law enforcement presence that contradicted many of the negative opinions and/or beliefs they may have had of law enforcement officers while at the same time providing them with vital life skill lessons.

The camp was attended by over one hundred kindergarten through 8th grade students that were taught core values such as caring, honesty, responsibility, respect, having self-confidence, and being able to utilize independent thought and action. Campers were also given the opportunity to create lasting friendships and encouraged to learn and explore in a supportive and nurturing environment.

The DUSMís G.R.E.A.T. instruction and supplementation was conducted on the final week of the Dryades YMCA six-week summer camp and scheduled activities during that week included computer, reading, and math lessons, swimming classes, sports activities and leadership development. The DUSMs closed out their G.R.E.A.T. week with a festival on the 16th of July that was attended by special invited guests that include DEA Special Agent in Charge Jimmy Fox, Orleans Parish Criminal Sheriff Marlin N. Gusman, 102.9 FMís Power Posse, and representatives from the United States Coast Guard. The festival opened with a talent show that the students used to showcase their talents. After the talent show, the campers had the opportunity of sliding down a 21í inflatable waterslide that the campers, get a snow cone, and partake in a barbeque lunch prepared by the DUSMs.
