Bastrop Prison Escapees Found in Mexico - Expelled, Face Additional Charges

Austin, TX – The manhunt for the two prison escapees turned fugitives who walked away from the Bastrop Minimum Security Prison Camp outside of Bastrop, Texas last week was short lived as the pair were located in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico, across from the border city of Del Rio, Texas, this evening. Leandro Luna, 52, of San Angelo, Texas and Adan Chavez, 53, of Edinburg, Texas were detained by the Procuraduria General de Justicia del Estado de Coahuila (PGJE). Both fugitives were processed and presented before Mexican Immigration officials and a determination was made by authorities that both had no legal status to remain in Mexico. Luna and Chavez were promptly expelled and turned over the U.S. Marshals led Lone Star Fugitive Task Force at the International Port of Entry at Del Rio, Texas this evening.

Luna and Chavez were on the run after both are alleged to have stolen a Bureau of Prisons (BOP) vehicle in their initial efforts to flee from the prison camp. On the evening of the escape, Luna contacted family members in Austin and shortly thereafter, abandoned the BOP vehicle at a local retail parking lot. Video footage captures Luna getting into a light blue or silver Chevrolet pickup. Task Force Investigators in Del Rio determined the duo crossed into Ciudad Acuña within several hours of their escape. Coordinating with our international law enforcement partners across the border, the PGJE (Coahuila State Police) quickly picked up the trail to a neighborhood where the two were identified and detained.

Luna and Chavez were transferred to the Val Verde County Detention Center in Del Rio pending their initial appearance before a United States Magistrate Judge to be advised of the additional escape charge. US Marshals will continue their investigation to determine if others assisted Luna and Chavez during their brief flight.

LaFayette Collins, United States Marshal for the Western District of Texas states, “The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force is committed to using our vast law enforcement resources and international partners to pursue those fugitives who think they can evade the long arm of the law.”
