A fugitive wanted by the
United States Marshals in the Southern District of Georgia was arrested
by the U.S. Marshals Orlando Office of Florida Regional Fugitive Task
Force and the Lake County Sheriff’s Department on April 7, 2009, in
Leesburg, Florida.
James Kimball, 69, was being sought on a federal warrant for Escape
issued in December, 2005. Kimball was serving a 156 month sentence at
the Federal Correctional Institution in Jesup, Georgia. Kimball was
convicted and sentenced in October of 2000 for multiple Prescription
Drug violations in the Middle District of Florida. Kimball was
transferred to the Federal Prison Camp in Jesup, Georgia in June of 2005
and escaped in December 2005. Kimball has been on the run since December
2005.
An extensive investigation has been conducted by the Marshals in
Southern Georgia which generated leads in the Orlando, Florida area.
This information was passed to the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional
Fugitive Task force in Orlando to investigate and try to locate Kimball.
The Orlando Fugitive Task Force generated an address at the Holiday
Travel trailer Park at 28229 CR 33, in Leesburg, Florida. Task force
officers located a truck registered to Kimball’s wife. The trailer was
vacant at the time. Investigators showed Kimball’s picture to various
sources, who recognized the photo. Investigators went to the management
office of the trailer park and were advised that Kimball stayed at two
trailers. It was learned that Kimball and his wife owned three trailers
in the trailer park. Investigators went to one trailer and knocked on
the door. After gaining entry, Marshals found Kimball hiding in an unlit
back bedroom in the trailer. Kimball offered no resistance and was taken
into custody. Kimball would not tell the Task Force officers his name
and only said: You know who I am, You won. You got me. Kimball had dyed
his hair black and grown a moustache during his almost three and one
half years on the run. Kimball was taken to the Federal Courthouse and
fingerprinted. A positive fingerprint match was made that confirmed his
identity. Kimball will be transferred back to Georgia to stand trial for
his escape charge.
Annually, investigations carried out by the U.S. Marshals result in the
apprehension of approximately 36, 000 federal fugitives. More federal
fugitives are arrested by the Marshals Service than all other federal
agencies combined.
The Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force has three offices:
Atlanta, Macon, and Savannah. The task force covers the whole state of
Georgia. The Savannah Offices of the Southeast Regional Fugitive Task
Force is a team comprised of investigators from the Georgia Department
of Corrections, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Department, the Savannah
Chatham Metropolitan Police Department and the United States Marshals
Service. The task force objective is to seek out and arrest fugitives
charged with violent crimes, drug crimes, sex offenders, and other
felonies. Last year, U.S. Marshals Task Forces arrested more than 58,600
state and local fugitives on felony charges.
