U.S. Marshals Arrest Multiple Murder Suspect from New Orleans
At approximately 5:30 a.m. at the Motel 6 off I-49 in Lafayette, twenty-year-old Randy Lewis was arrested by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force with assistance from the Lafayette Parish Sheriffs Office and the Lafayette Police Department. Randy Lewis is Wanted by the New Orleans Police Department for Attempted Murder, Jefferson Parish Sheriffs Office for two counts of Attempted Murder and is a suspect in another murder investigation with Jefferson Parish authorities. Jefferson Parish alleges that Lewis was involved in three separate shooting incidents that occurred on or about February 18th.

It is believed that Lewis went on this rampage with Steven Givens and Brandon Tate; the other two suspects were arrested prior to Lewis by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Forces in New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Task Force members in New Orleans developed credible information that Lewis may be in the Lafayette area and at approximately 5:00 p.m. yesterday, that information was provided to our office. Task Force members and Lafayette Police Officers worked throughout the night to locate Lewis.

At around midnight, credible information was developed that led the Task Force to Motel 6 (off I-49). However, early on, Task Force members did not know what room Lewis was in. As time went on more information was developed that led officers to the specific room in which Lewis was staying. The Lafayette Police Department Hostage Negotiators contacted Lewis on the phone and Lewis promptly came out of his room and surrendered peacefully.

The United States Marshal for the Western District of Louisiana said, “The coordinated effort of all law enforcement to bring dangerous criminals to justice ensures that the streets and neighborhoods of Louisiana are a safer place to raise our children.”

Annually, investigations carried out by the U.S. Marshals result in the apprehension of approximately 34,000 federal fugitives. More federal fugitives are arrested by Marshals than all other federal agencies combined.

The Western District of Louisiana’s Task Force is a team comprised of law enforcement officers from agencies throughout the Western part of Louisiana (Shreveport, Monroe, Lake Charles, Alexandria, Opelousas, and Lafayette). The task force objective is to seek out and arrest federal, state, and local fugitives, mainly those with violent criminal histories to include sex offenders. In 2007, U.S. Marshals task forces arrested more than 56,600 state and local fugitives on felony charges.
