Abingdon, Virginia - United States
Marshal G. Wayne Pike and Smyth County Sheriff David Bradley announce the
capture of Jason Betts and Mithrellas Curtis in San Antonio, Texas. The
arrest follows an intense six day manhunt covering multiple states and
involving numerous federal, state, and local agencies. Betts and Curtis have
been charged in connection with the December 8, 2008 murder of James Brown
at his residence in Chilhowie, Virginia as well as the assault of three
others in the residence at the time.
Betts and Curtis were located by U.S.
Marshals and members of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force in San Antonio,
Texas at approximately 7 am today. Information developed during the early
morning hours indicated they may be in the San Antonio area. Marshals and
task force members began searching the area and eventually located the
stolen mini-van in which they had been traveling. Two subjects were observed
sleeping in the van that was backed in next to a dumpster. At this time the
mini-van was surrounded and a dynamic entry was made, effectively surprising
the couple and resulting in their capture. No law enforcement officers were
injured during the arrest.
Both Marshal Pike and Sheriff Bradley agree
that the success of the capture was a direct result of the close working
relationship that has developed between their departments via the Capital
Area Regional Fugitive Task Force. The Capital Area Regional Fugitive Task
Force is comprised of U.S. Marshals and numerous state and local agencies
throughout the area.
The Marshals Service is our nation’s oldest
federal law enforcement agency founded in 1789. U.S. Marshals and their
deputies are responsible for providing protection to the federal judiciary,
apprehension of federal fugitives, transporting federal prisoners,
protecting endangered federal witnesses and managing assets seized from
criminal enterprises. Annually the U.S. Marshal arrest more fugitives than
all other federal law enforcement agencies combined. More on the U.S.
