Personnel

  • 94 U.S. Marshals, one for each federal court district
  • 3,345 Deputy U.S. Marshals and Criminal Investigators

    Fugitive Apprehension

  • Arrested more than 36,400 federal fugitives, clearing approximately 39,400 felony warrants
  • USMS-led fugitive task forces arrested more than 90,800 state/local fugitives, clearing approximately 117,000 state/local felony warrants
  • Arrested more than 3,600 homicide suspects and more than 3,600 gang members
  • Captured 204 15 Most Wanted fugitives since 1983
  • Extradited/deported 874 fugitives from 65 countries in FY 2009
  • Authorized 15,187 special deputations in FY 2009
  • Under the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act, enacted in FY 2006, Marshals apprehended 10,019 sex offenders in FY 2009
  • Additionally, 1,545 cases were initiated with 320 warrants issued and 278 arrested for violating the Walsh Act

    Justice Prisoner and Alien Transportation

  • 345,860 federal prisoner movements
  • Over 196,500 movements by air

    Judicial Security

  • Provides a 24/7 response capability for intake and review of threats against the judiciary through the Threat Management Center
  • Ensures the safe and secure conduct of judicial proceedings and protects more than 2,000 federal judges and approximately 5,250 other court officials at more than 400 court facilities
  • Protects the Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy in Washington, D.C., and when he travels
  • Protects the Deputy Attorney General in Washington, D.C., and when he travels
  • Protects the Supreme Court Justices when outside of Washington, D.C.
  • Coordinates security for judicial conferences throughout the United States
  • Provides protective details for foreign officials during the United Nations General Assembly Sessions
     

    Asset Seizure and Forfeiture

  • Currently managing approximately 18,000 assets with a value of more than $2 billion
  • Real property represents 8 percent of total value
  • Cash and financial instruments represent 79 percent of total value
  • Vehicles comprise 26 percent of inventory items
  • Approximately $5.2 billion shared with state and local agencies since FY 1985
  • In FY 2009, equitable sharing payments were approximately $395 million
     

    Prisoner Operations

  • Prisoners in daily custody: Approximately 58,500
  • Prisoners received yearly: 235,000
  • Intergovernmental Agreement jails: 1,800
     

    Special Operations Group

  • Specially trained tactical unit created in 1971
  • Responds to emergencies anywhere in the United States or its territories
  • Provides tactical support to district offices or as ordered by the U.S. Attorney General
  • Headquartered at Camp Beauregard, a Louisiana National Guard installation
     

    Witness Security Program

  • Witnesses: More than 8,200
  • Participants: More than 18,000 (witnesses and family members)
