THE LONE STAR FUGITIVE TASK FORCE ANNOUNCES THE ARREST OF ESCAPED TEXAS INMATE ON THE RUN FOR TEN YEARS

Del Rio – The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force along with the Val Verde County Sheriff’s Office announce the arrest of Jose Rivera, an escaped convict who was captured in Miami last week by the Miami-Dade Police Department.

On August 9, 1997, three inmates broke out of the Val Verde County Detention Center after they pried open a door leading to a crawl space with pipes that led to the facility’s roof.  The men then crawled through a steel grate and used a homemade rope to scale the side of the detention center and fled into the desert scrub brush.  Since his escape, Rivera has used many aliases and fraudulent identifiers.

Val Verde County Sheriff A. D’Wayne Jernigan, who had only been in office for about a month at the time of the escape, said he is proud of the efforts officers put into the manhunt for the escapees.  “I commend the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force and our own Jesse Lopez for their continued efforts in looking for these fugitives.  They’re tracking them down and putting them back where they belong!”

United States Marshal for the Western District of Texas LaFayette Collins said, “Fugitives only have two choices when being pursued by the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force; either peacefully surrender to law enforcement authorities or face a life of constant fear, knowing no matter where you hide or how far you run, in the end, you face justice”.
