Suspect in Brutal East Texas Rape Arrested by Task Force

Greensburg - Members of the U.S. Marshals led Middle Louisiana Fugitive Task Force arrested a Greensburg man Friday morning in connection with a brutal rape that occurred in Tyler, Texas. Joseph Alfred Haywood, Jr., 41, was arrested at his residence for allegedly brutally raping and torturing a woman after leaving a Tyler nightclub in October of 1995. The case remained unsolved for over a decade with no suspects until September when Texas investigators were notified that a national DNA database linked Haywood to the crime. The victim was contacted and positively identified Haywood as the attacker through a photo line-up. Haywood was booked into the Tangipahoa Parish Jail awaiting extradition to Texas.

“Today’s arrest is yet another example that law enforcement in this community will never stop chasing down violent criminals, here or in another state. The Baton Rouge community is safer tonight that this man is off our streets.” said Task Force Coordinator Randy Breckwoldt.

The Middle Louisiana Fugitive Task Force, coordinated by the U.S. Marshals Service,is a multi-agency task force that targets persons wanted for violent crimes, narcotic offenses, and sex offenders in the Capitol area and surrounding Parishes. Contributing agencies are the East and West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Offices, the Louisiana Attorney General’s Office, and the Louisiana State Probation and Parole.
