United States Marshal David R. Murtaugh

David R. Murtaugh, United States Marshal

David R. Murtaugh was born and raised in Lafayette, Indiana.  He is a graduate of Lafayette Jefferson and Vincennes University.  Mr. Murtaugh started his law enforcement career with the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Department in 1977.  He is a graduate of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy's 48th Session.  Mr. Murtaugh worked his way through the ranks of the Sheriff's Department before being elected Sheriff of Tippecanoe County in 1994 and re-elected in 1998.  He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy's 165 session.  Mr. Murtaugh was elected to the Board of Director of the National Sheriffs' Association serving until 2002.  In 1999, he served as President of the Indiana Sheriff's Association and as President of the FBI National Academy Associates of Indiana.  Mr. Murtaugh has served on many state and national boards and committees regarding law enforcement matters.

On December 11, 2001, President George W. Bush nominated Mr. Murtaugh to be United States Marshal for the Northern District of Indiana.  His appointment was confirmed by the United States Senate and the President signed his appointment on February 14, 2002.
