Thomas Dyson Hurlburt Jr.
began his police career in 1968 with the Orlando police department. He
rose to police chief in 1991 and stayed for four years before retiring.
In 1992, Chief Thomas Hurlburt established the Downtown Bicycle Patrol
with 20 officers. The bicycle patrols proved so effective, that more
than 90 officers now ride mountain bikes, full or part time, as part of
their normal patrol duties.
Chief Hurlburt also started an Assault and Battery Unit in 1993 to focus on the Domestic Violence problem. In 1994, a Gang Suppression Unit was started and the Juvenile Assessment Center opened. In 1995, Chief Hurlburt also helped start the Intensive Community Program, a program designed to provide an alternative to detention for moderate risk juvenile offenders. In 1995 he became director of public safety in Orange County until his appointment to United States Marshal for the Middle District of Florida on March 24, 2003. |
