After being recommended by Senator Dianne Feinstein, Don O’Keefe was nominated by President Barack Obama on June 9, 2010 to serve as the United States Marshal for the Northern District of California. On August 5, 2010, Marshal O’Keefe was unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate, and on August 11, 2010, President Obama signed his commission. On September 9, 2010, Marshal O’Keefe was sworn in by Marshal Service Director John Clark in a ceremony held at the Marshal Service’s Headquarters in Alexandria, VA.

Marshal O’Keefe is responsible for the management, administration, and direction of operations throughout the Northern District of California. His overall responsibilities include protecting the United States Courts and judiciary, criminal investigations, executions of federal court orders, and other law enforcement activities. Marshal O’Keefe is also responsible to act as the chief policy maker, decision maker, and for implementation and development of new programs both administratively and operationally.

Prior to his appointment, Marshal O’Keefe served for over three years as the Police Chief for the City of Half Moon Bay, California. He was responsible for public safety and for the overall effectiveness of the Police Department. Marshal O’Keefe also became an integral part of the City management team, serving on occasions as the Acting City Manager. Marshal O’Keefe was active in the local law enforcement community, serving as the Secretary of the San Mateo County Police Chiefs and Sheriff Association, and as member of the Board of Directors of the California Police Chiefs Association.

Prior to his tenure in Half Moon Bay, Marshal O’Keefe spent 27 years with the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office in California, before retiring in 2007 at the rank of Captain. Marshal O’Keefe worked all the major divisions at the Sheriff’s Office, which included administration, uniform patrol, investigations, court security, and custody. He also served as the Commander of the San Mateo County Narcotics Task Force, Manager of the East Palo Alto Regional Investigative Bureau, and Acting Director of the Northern California High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA).

Marshal O’Keefe is a graduate of the 172nd session of the FBI National Academy and was the 2005 President of the California Chapter. He holds a Bachelor‘s Degree in Human Services Administration from Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont, California, and a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of San Francisco. Marshal O’Keefe is a member of several law enforcement organizations, including the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), California Police Officers Associations (CPOA), and the FBI National Academy Associates (FBINAA) to name a few.
