Prisoner Detention   

General:  The United States Marshals Service (USMS) is responsible for the custody of pre-trial prisoners in the Federal judicial system. The USMS is responsible for obtaining adequate detention space to house USMS prisoners in their custody.  Detention facilities the USMS uses must meet U.S. Department of Justice detention standards and minimum conditions of confinement.

Pre-Trial Prisoners:  The USMS houses prisoners at a number of facilities around the state. The facilities in which a prisoner in housed normally is dependent upon where his court case is heard.  The USMS houses prisoners in the following cities at the facilities listed:

Post-Sentence Prisoners:  When a prisoner is sentenced to a term of imprisonment, the prisoner is designated by the United States Bureau of Prisons (BOP) to serve his/her term in a BOP facility. These facilities are spread throughout the United States.  Once the prisoner is moved to that facility, he/she is in the custody of the BOP.  The BOP has three facilities for sentenced prisoners in the State of Arizona.
